Rather than an explanation, this is the third main concomitant of singers' shift from dependent to professional status.
Moreover, it does not account for the attainment of professional status (where it actually existed), but instead simply labels certain occupations as professions.
Given the rise of polyphony in the period, this allowed the expansion of both music and the musicians' economic, social and professional status.
