AMD's processors actually have a higher heat tolerance which can easily allow them to last much longer. Many Intel chips use horrible compound to hold on the lid which can drastically reduce cooling performance after only a few years. This can quickly lead to them burning up long before AMD's...

Landviz this would likely be your best bet for thermal compound. Do note; many coolers do come with it pre-applied. If you do not plan on moving from AMD's/Intel's stock cooler, you do not need to buy this.
