carved pumpkin

Carving a pumpkin doesn't work for me. I have to spawn an iron golem to get to the next island. But nothing happens with the pumpkin when I press L2 to carve. Can anyone help me?

For some reason my hoppers turn into carved pumpkins after a while of them being placed down. I can change them back by simply breaking them but it’s a bit tedious. Also I can’t seem to carve pumpkins with shears any help would be appreciated (:

I am currently in third island and the quest is to fight snow golem . But now the problem is that i dont have any iron to make shears to make carved pumpkins . So now i cant progress further. So my question is, is there any way to make carved pumpkin while in third island(taiga island) .pls...
