Seems a little odd that your small tree has massive roots. Why do the roots also just stay ground level? its almost like a path and nothing like tree roots, the point of roots are to dig deep into the ground and anchor the tree, having most of it exposed at ground level makes no sense.

And we can not see your friends build, try re uploading the images
