Lobby fishing is long known as the most boring activity on Java. First, I want to state that lobby games are great: They give you something to do while waiting for a friend in a party, when you don't want to play a full game of something or you are a bit tired of the games, or when you are simply bored. Having said this I think the Lobby Fishing needs some small improvements to tackle what it lacks compared to scavenger hunting, which I think is much more fun and way chiller than fishing.
I think scavenger hunting has a couple of aspects which are inherently different to fishing which makes it more exciting to do and easier to choose compared to fishing. These points are:
- Make the reels more similar in time.
Making the reels more consistent means that you do not have to pay attention at all time, but can go on a more automatic pilot. The benefits from this are that you know when to enter and exit chat to make sure you don't miss a catch, which is truly the most annoying about fishing (having a little lag can cause you to wait for another 30 seconds before you get one catch, which you most likely already had). Also, it gives a bit more predictability to fishing as a whole. I've recast my rod multiple times because I simply do not know for certain whether my rod is working or not. Disadvantage to this solution is that it enables an opportunity window for people that want to use a macro for fishing because they want the entire collection. Countered to some extend by a point limit, but doesn't change the entire argument that much.
- Make the fish catchable at any moment after the bobber goes down.
Making a fish catchable without a specific catch window makes it much easier for people to actually catch items. Currently, you have about two seconds from the moment the bobber goes down to when you cannot catch a fish anymore. This is a very short time and makes it extremely draining to pay attention at all times. Also, you cannot go into chat and type a message anymore, because you can catch a fish in the middle of your sentence and you either have to press 'esc' to catch it and start over with your message, or you have to start over with catching a fish. This means, you cannot have any interaction during fishing, because it might harm your fishing progress. Making the fish be catchable after this 2 second window makes it much more accessible and gives the opportunity to players to communicate during fishing.
All of the above mentioned solutions are possible to program, even though I myself do not know how. I know other servers however that do this with fishing to make it more accessible, so I think it is worth it to look into solutions as the above mentioned ones. - You can pause at any moment, whether it is for a short or long time, without losing progress (in the form of walking up to a relic)
