So I kept seeing those stupid scamming bots with their links, and i decided to click to the scamming website just to see what it looked like. And no, I did NOT enter ANY information. I looked at it for about 20 seconds, then closed tab.

What worried me a little was that it showed my IP address directly on the site, and I understand that you basically give it to a website if you want to even be able to connect to it. But, (I Googled some answers so I have a basic idea) if a scamming website knows your IP, how much can they hack you from that? (I portforwarded a server once but it doesnt work anymore and I never turn it on - to my knowledge you cannot hack into one's router only unless the server is actually running) Im guessing they cant/will not attempt to break into your router and steal confidential information using an IP address? I didnt give any other information.

@repository (I know you're a coder but you might have some knowledge on web security?)

Btw I connected to the website using my iPad, not a computer.

The furthest they could be able to trace you too would be a rough location (city/town), which would be a router of your ISP.

They would only be able to get your exact address from the ISP if they had the documentation to do so due to data protection acts (the ISP stores network addresses of each router in your house and your MAC address [physical location] of your electronic device should you connect to that router).

That's pretty much it for traceability.

You'll be fine.

If you have only left your IP address there and not for example your IPv4 and IPv6 address and other things you should be fine.

An open port on your router will return an ICMP unreachable if no service is running. If a service is runnable, it can be vunerable, and hence vulnerabilities can be exploited.
About the most someone can do with an IP address alone is flood you with useless packets which would slow your connection, but no one tends to invest enough in doing so unless they have a significant grudge against them.
If you have a dynamically assigned IP (most home internet connections), restarting your router will most likely change your IP anyway.
Showing an IP address on a site is most likely a scare tactic.
Regardless of whether you connected from a computer or an iPad, the same IP will be seen as you WAN IP is the IP of your router. Within your network, each device is assigned a LAN IP.

Any website can display your Ip, (e.g. Ip Tracing sites).

As for your Question "How Much can you gain from a IP", Well I can tell u you can Publish a decent dox from just a Ip.

If you want I can help u set up a decent proxy if u need it for skype or browsing , Pm me.

You can gain nothing from an IP address- perhaps a general location, perhaps if there computer is set up badly you can hack into it... EVERY WEBSITE HAS YOUR IP- don't worry about hiding it now :)

But then again there are such good hackers who can get your address in seconds after knowing your iP... But don't worry, I guess everyone in your road knows your address already :D:p
