I wouldn't give him the link to get into it right away. He needs to learn Java first. Getting straight into coding with API's is a bad idea.

some are bad as h***. Some are bugged, other don't explain....Then give him the link to a good tutorial.
There are plenty that are fine. The ones that may be bugged are the API ones like Bukkit. Pogo made an entire series on it and there has been many changes since then but the code still works great, and if some of it doesn't work, the average person should be able to find a way around it.
oh, eh, welcome back?Udemy has a great Java development course. It does cost a bit of money, however it is 100% worth it for the resources and support it offers. After learning a bit about Java, you can delve into the depths of different API's and start messing around with plugins. :)
