YoU can just experiment tbh. Get a new name and no rank, go back to the old rank.

But this also will be a problem or banning / muting coz you can change your username, I would suggest IP banning / muting but that would cause havoc if you have siblings.
Any ideas for that?^
It wont be a problem with banning/points, I pointed this out on a recent thread. Read this post by mojang.
look at the 4th bullet point, changing usernames part.

The new ids will help with that too. every player has a profile connected to mojang that is like a fingerprint and cant be changed. no matter how much you change your name, you always have the same id

Essentially, we don't use your playernames any more for bans/mutes.
When say, someone uses /mute or /ban, our server contacts a Mojang server asking for the UUID of the player (we actually also cache UUIDs and store last known UUIDs in a database to help prevent spamming the Mojang servers, but that's a little more complex). The Mojang server responds and tells the CCG server what the player's UUID is. The CCG server then stores that the player's UUID in the database, with the fact that they're muted/banned. When the player next connects, their UUID is looked up again, and compared to the ones in the database. If it matches one, the player is disallowed to join/speak.
That's the UUID system in a nutshell.
