When sea levels were lower during the Pleistocene ice age, including the Last Glacial Maximum about 18,000 BC, they were connected by dry land. During the past 10,000 years, rising sea levels overflowed the lowlands and separated the continent into today's low-lying arid to semi-arid mainland and the two mountainous islands of New Guinea and Tasmania.[2]

As far as I know, americans usually treat australia as a continent, tbh i never heard that coming from a non-American, here we call Australia+New Zealand+ Some other islands as "Oceania", idk if it is like that everywhere else
Ehm, yes. This should be the case for everyone on the planet but people often think Australia is a continent in itself
