if anyone says remote to me, I think they are meaning the remote for a toy car or tv. when they say controller I would immediately understand what they mean. answer: you need to call it controller.
I would call that a controller because the remote is more for like a Tv "remove" or any utility device
while controllers are for consoles/playing

Definitely controller for me. If someone says remote I just think of a tv or something similar but saying controller I immediately understand what is meant (:
Remote is just short for remote controller, and controller is short for remote controller so, technically either would be correct. However, I don't think anyone would say xbox remote or TV controller.
