I don’t believe anyone has said updating is pointless, in fact, I believe John said that the original plan was to update back on a post somewhere. 1.13 isn’t even released yet means it is impossible for us to even work on any potential server update. This has been explained again and again.

Isn't updating to 1.13 inevitable anyway because 1.13 clients will allow swimming underwater? Or will there be a way around that?

I asked reddit someone said “cringe” idk what he meant. Another guy said no, another guy said yes but it would be very buggy.

Maybe the "cringe" guy thought you actually wanted to do that on a public server. Even if this was possible, it would obviously be a terrible idea, probably even worse than the 1.9-1.12.2 compatibility.

I don't really know anything about this, so I'm just making wild guesses.

I often see people mention block id changes, but I don't see how that would affect the compatibility more than any other update. Block id's still exist in the network protocol and the protocol has been changed every update anyway.
With the swimming feature, so far I can only think of two really bad ways to implement 1.12 compatibility.
  1. Don't tell 1.12 clients that a player is swimming. They will only see the player moving very fast in water. 1.12 players will be confused and hopefully update to 1.13 eventually. This would of course be bad for 1.12 players, but at least they can choose to update at any time, so this is still better than
  2. Don't allow 1.13 players to swim. As far as I know there is no proper way to tell a player not to sprint, so I guess it will be the same with swimming. Reducing the food points of players in water comes to mind, but that would be a bad idea for obvious reasons. Maybe canceling the swimming after a player starts swimming would work, but depending on the network delay they might already have moved a lot. So the server would have to teleport them back, resulting in a terrible game experience for 1.13 players.
The least bad option other than asking players to update to 1.13 would be to somehow simulate swimming for 1.12 clients. I'm not sure if the 1.12 client sends a packet to the server when a player tries to sprint while in water. If it does, the server could possibly set them into elytra flying mode and set their velocity or something, but that would probably create new bugs, especially when considering network delay.

Edit: Found this thread about the topic earlier, but most things he says don't sound right...

Do those commentors not realize that hypixel cant just use plugins to fix everything


I dont know anything about plugins myself but idk if they’ll be able to stop swimming or water mechanics. (Especially water mechanics)

They were able to stop the 1.12 knowledge book and shield knockback though.

Nobody said it was pointless, but I am going to say that I'm slowly hating on 1.13 because people keep making thread about 'em.
It hasn't even been released. After 1.13 officially has been released then go make threads about it.

It will be, but likely not cross-compatible for a while.

Ah, misunderstood you then. But I really hope they won't get back to that stupid compatibility system once they get rid of it.
CubeCraft have the added benefit of being an official Minecraft partner, so Mojang could potentially provide them with a solution.

I don't understand why Mojang creates all these problems for itself and all the servers anyway - they could literally just revert PVP and bam, everybody would completely willing to just play the latest version.

i'm not gonna lie, as a long time pvper (from 2011) this looks bad, i feel like it will just ruin the pvp system and this thing is gonna be way too op lmao

Guessing you're wondering to make it cross-version compatible due to swimming?

If I remember correctly you only start swimming differently when holding your sprint key, in which case they could just make you rubberband just like depth strider would on a 1.8 server with 1.7 ncp.

Apart from that, they were also able to change movement speed in speed eggwars without making it show up as a potion effect (if I remember correctly), same logic could probably be applied to swimming.

1.12 users could receive depth strider when in water to make it even,

1.13 users could get slowness when swimming (don't know if this would have an effect)

Info may be inaccurate, didnt do any research etc.
