What is the perfect GPU for minecraft?

with $500 is highly dubt you can make a good PC.... But, I'll try to do my best:

• Get some RAM (with some I mean 8GB as minimum, MC is RAM EATER)
• A good intel as CPU (Like some i7)
• Decent GPU (You will not play with shaders, true? in that case I'll recommend a GeForce 760+

If someone wants, this is my PC (1200€):

• 16GB RAM
• Intel i7 4790
• GeForce GTX960 2GB
• 2TB HD + 256GB SSD

Are you planning on playing any other massive games with it?
If not an i5 CPU and a GTX 660 graphic card could be more than enough.
Talking from experience, I have the i5 4590 and GTX 660 and I'm getting 100 to 300 fps without optifine which is more than enough I believe.

How many chunks? Just curious, I get 200+ without OptiFine, in 32 Chuncks :P

Minecraft really isn't GPU intensive so you can definitely use an older card from the 600 range like @TlmeLord suggested, however RAM is very important when it comes to minecraft so I would say 8GB is a minimum and if you want to save money on your CPU then you can definitely go for an AMD CPU if you don't mind the slightly worse performance but a lot better value for money.

I have a pc with the same specs but a gtx 970 for $900

You can max out Minecraft (16 chunks) with a desktop Skylake CPU and integrated HD 530 graphics and get over 60 FPS most of the time. The laptop chips with HD 530 won't do so well because they have less power to work with (45W max for mobile vs. 47W minimum for desktop). If you want a dedicated card, you'll have no trouble getting several hundred FPS with a GT 740/R7 250X. For running shaders, I'd say a GTX 750 Ti/R7 360 is the minimum as they can play medium shader packs at 60 FPS most of the time.

RAM isn't very important for Minecraft. Usually 1GB allocated is more than enough, but I noticed that amplified worlds require more. If you'd like a more in-depth analysis, check out this post I made over on PMC.

If you're curious about CPU choice as well, get something that can work on 4 threads at once or more. This means a minimum of an i3/FX-4xxx/Athlon II x4. A dual core like a Pentium is still overkill for Minecraft, but it's seriously hampered by other processes running in the background, killing game performance.

If your building a new PC for minecraft, don't
Minecraft is not a game you need a custom PC for and if you get 800$ - save up then you can get a GTX 960 PC
