A genuine question here, I've played plenty of skywars and in my time I've noticed that players with ranks tend to vote for basic loot as opposed to the standard and imo superior normal loot — and frankly, I don't understand why. Assuming everyone here is relatively experienced with skywars, I'd like to go over what I believe are the likely reasons for so many people voting for basic.

For starters, I figured the kit 'Swordsman' may play a big part in this, as it guarantees the player to receive a strong weapon right of the bat. If my memory serves me correctly, kits wouldn't change regardless of the vote outcome. Cube has since made a change that determines the strength of said kits depending on what type of loot won the initial voting process. Ultimately, even with its slight nerf, swordsman is still noticeably better in the basic meta. Whereas, in normal the kit isn't as necessary, simply because you're practically guaranteed to find better weapons inside your chests anyway.
In short, voting basic in conjunction with choosing the swordsman kit makes the mode inherently ~pay to win~ or at least creates a situation that majorly favors those with this kit selected.

Moving on to the second reason, which I believe to be the absence of goldenapples, though, I agree that endlessly chugging goldenapples makes for a very lopsided and stale duel. I find that goldenapples undertake a far more annoying problem being of course... cleaning! Cleaning is a whole separate issue on its own which comes down to morality. Whether you should or shouldn't do it is not relevant here. Fact of the matter is, that goldenapples are the perfect counter. Playing basic removes this counter and effectively makes the game more prone to the cleaning playstyle. Funnily enough, the peeps that complain the most about cleaning are the same people that vote basic in the first place. A bit counterintuitive if you'd ask me.

Lastly, I'd like to go over the argument of: 'games play out faster, it's easier to kill people, players have less health, etc etc.' These arguments all fall flat imo, simply because the difference between the modes in terms of damage output is hardly noticeable. Both armor and weapons decrease in strength therefore essentially canceling each other out.. if that makes sense.

These are my best guesses, if you're an avid basic voter lmk why you vote for basic because I'm seriously curious!
Note: I'm mainly talking about solo skywars but this could go for team skywars too

It's because trolls. Trolls like me love to ruin the experience for everyone and we know that most people hate basic mode. The only reason why I would vote for basic is because.

1. Trolling
- Troll is pretty fun. Tbh, I dislike basic mode but it's pretty fun and everyone hate basic mode so I guess why not make their experience ruined by voting for basic mode?
2. Gapples and unfair gameplay
- There's a kit in skywars that gives gapples (gapples is short for golden apples btw). You see, the gapples may look like it's worthless or just not worth it but to me, that's a huge advantage especially while being in game. Also the game is pretty much unbalanced and whoever got iron pick or sword have high chance of winning. Iron sword is pretty unfair but pretty fun to use since well, it's unfair (obviously). Iron pick in the other hand is pretty good to mine diamonds since it's the only pick in skywars that can mine diamonds.
3. Testing purposes
- Sometimes I just test out if playing on basic mode would be fun or fair in specific maps such as seasonal maps or maps I've never played basic on.

1. When I played SkyWars back in my prime, I preferred basic mode (also favored this mode in SG and the hardcore mode in EggWars). No, I didn't do it for trolling but rather because I enjoyed playing basic mode.

2. Basic mode is simple. There's no enchants included with the gear, no diamond gear, and no gapple spamming; as such, the main way to get enchants and diamond gear is to craft them yourself or kill players who also happened to craft their own. Gear difference isn't as steep as that in OP mode and normal mode to a lesser extent. If you're missing even a single armor piece in OP mode, you better hope you find one in your next chest(s) or it's game over if you're forced to fight.

As with every game, every item in the game is up for grabs and is fair game. If you don't get iron+ items because someone beat you to it, then it's your fault for taking too long to get those.

op is way fairer than basic or normal imo

SkyWars has never been a truly fair game to begin with (and I say more so in OP mode because of the starker gear difference at the early game). Even though every player island starts with the same number of chests, the loot that's rolled in each one is different. One island (island A) might get lucky to get all 4 pieces of diamond armor and a sharpness diamond sword in OP mode, but another island (island B) might get only 2-3 unique pieces of armor (for example 2 chestplates + 2 leggings instead of a full set) and a clean diamond axe. If those two players were to meet each other immediately after looting their starting islands, the one with the lucky full set of gear would most likely win (assuming both are evenly skilled and no one is shoved into the void). And let's not forget one thing: in OP mode, every hit against partially armored or naked players hurts much more than in basic and normal.

Mid is another story that's entirely the player's fault for not getting there first, but starting islands are completely out of the player's control.

Maybe a bit of a dumb question, but do chat prefixes exist on Cubecraft Java like they do on Bedrock?
