Sometimes they can be better. But I still prefer swords. Because I use a lot of my secondairy weapons such as:

• A bow
• FnS/Lava bucket
• A waterbucket to run away if you're low
• TnT

The shield part is not true, why you may ask, because if somebody knows what they are doing with a sword either a. they crit circles around you or b. they'll keep hitting you with sword half charges to knock you back so you can't hit them. With swords you can do semi-combos with half charge.(

fair point, the cooldown on swords is shorter so hotkeying to those items you listed and back can be more efficient

In a situation where someone is doing the half-hit combo kind of thing, I don't recommend using shields at all as it slows you down, so you would just try to strafe/back up to avoid the combo and then step in to get an axe hit on and repeat
