Option 1: Adding extra items to the bonus chest
In the video mentioned above, DanRobzProbz added some items to the bonus chest:
- A cauldron (To collect water; it would take forever to get enough ingots from zombies to craft a cauldron, so it’s better to start off with one)
- Blaze rods (For brewing)
- Lava tile (For a cobblestone generator; I’m not sure how to get this item in Minecraft but it might be possible with the /give command. If it’s not possible, you could place a block of lava in the ground and that could work. Also I think I forgot about the lava when doing the challenges, or at least the second one anyway; oops xD. I could’ve accomplished more if I remembered the lava)
Nether wart (You technically don’t need it for a potion of weakness, so we can remove this item from the list I guess)
In this video he also added a custom trade to the stonemason villager that allows you to get obsidian, but in this case I suppose we could add some to the chest, ideally 10 to make a portal. An enchantment table could be made later using the corners of the Nether portal that appears in the Nether. So to this list we can add:
Also we should ensure that the chest has at least 1 apple to use later for a golden apple.
As soon as the items are added to the chest, you switch to Survival and turn off cheats. My mistake in the second challenge was giving myself items later on; now I know to have the items I need ahead of time.
Option 2: Starting in the Nether
Having access to the Nether would allow you to get a wider variety of items naturally, so at some point I decided it would be cool to start in the Nether and try to get into the Overworld (which is a flat world with a bonus chest)
That challenge proved difficult though as I often ended up dying in the Nether, but it would still be interesting to complete it at some point. (Part of the challenge was that if I died I restarted it on a new world). I think that it would be a good way to go about the flat world challenge without using cheats (except to get into the Nether at the start, break the portal, go into Survival Mode, and to later remove the portal block in the Overworld after leaving the Nether)
However, starting in the Nether isn’t exactly the most natural circumstance to be in, so I think Option 1 would work better in that case.
