SOS! I have a i3 6100 and i was thinking if i should upgrade to a i5 6500 or i7 6700. Does the hyperthreading of the i7 help with my minecraft performance, or is it ok to just have a simple 4 core cpu...

Going from i3 to i7 is a pretty big jump, and your computer probably won't be able to handle that much processing power (unless you're upgrading all of your parts). So, I'd suggest going to i5.

WARNING:
Make sure that your motherboard can hold the CPU. You don't want to get a 1151 CPU for a 1155 slot motherboard. Good luck :)

The hyperthreading of the i7 will have no noticeable difference to your minecraft performance. The i5 will be fine. I upgraded from an i5 to i7 and my minecraft hasn't changed at all. the hyperthreading only will have an impact on very new high end games

The i 5 should run fine the hyper threading is for large amounts of incoming data and since it has a lesser chance of not working on your current motherboard it would work fine and if it on the unlikely chance doesn't work it won't mean u wasted 400$ XD i7's be expensive

Your i3 is great for Minecraft. Vanilla Minecraft is heavily single-threaded so the extra cores won't help unless you want to run large modpacks, in which case an i7 would be ideal. Base on my own testing, some mods have multithreaded workloads and benefit from the extra threads an i7 has.

If you're looking for more performance in vanilla (or lightly modded) Minecraft, your GPU is more likely the better choice to upgrade. What GPU do you have?

And guys, about the motherboard and socket - the i3-6100 is an LGA1151 chip, so it'll work in any LGA1151 board and any consumer-grade LGA1151 chip will work in his board*, including the i5 and i7 OP listed.
*Xeon E3 v5 CPUs use LGA1151, but for this generation Intel decided to restrict their usage to C232 chipset boards. You can, however, use any LGA1151 chip in a C232 board.
