Java opens ports on your computer, basically meaning that java can do anything to your computer.

There has been a threat that Java has been getting hacked lately and that Java users are at risk.

@Superherolinker In the new Minecraft Launcher, you don't need Java to run Minecraft.
If you want to install Optifine, i suggest downloading Java
Other than that, Java is safe:)

Your firewall may have blocked Java from accessing the internet. It does this because it is unknown to your computer and it automatically will block it to try and prevent damage to your computer. This is a good thing but firewall doesn't get everything right, so sometimes it can block something you don't want blocked.
I assume you are only getting a black screen when you try to join a server. This is because firewall is blocking Java from the internet, and your Minecraft needs Java. If Java can't access the internet then you can't join a server, which is probably why your screen goes black.

Java is a very legit platform that many things use to run. Minecraft is actually written in the Java language believe it or not.

For windows, to stop firewall blocking Java from accessing the internet, do this: Go to control panel > System and Security > Windows Firewall > Allow an app or feature through Windows Firewall. Once you get to this point, click "change settings" and scroll through all the listed features until you find Java(TM) Platform SE Binary and make sure everything for it is checked (If there's more than one Java, check them all) and click ok. Now you can play Minecraft servers with Java!

@EpicM_B00p as long as its a trusted application you should be ok. Ive had rats installed on my computer by idiots through my ports. So just be careful.
EDIT: If you ever do get a rat just google how to close ports :)

You need Java for minecraft as wel! because 70% of minecraft is made out of Java coding.

Bruh no comment, Oh my bad :)
And btw on the point off "Java is Bad'' Java is not bad because the Websites need Java to run good, I not say you need java but. If you see that your java is old you will get a message and the website. will be laggy or not working for you :)

And

So I have heard many rumors that Java opened ports on your computer. Will I get viruses?

Thats not true. Java dont Open ports for Virus, and waht @R-A-M-O-N said thats true.

Just behind you.
Java (as the rest of the programs) connect to the internet through ports, opening them means that Java (or anything written in JAVA like Minecraft) can get access to the internet. If you block your ports or allow the firewall to do it, you're restricting java from conecting to CCG servers (which are somewhere on the internet) and consequently Minecraft will do weird things.
