Top 10 Worst Updates

I’ve been diving deep into the news section of the forums, categorising all the updates they ever made. Some were okay, some were good, some were terrible. Last Tuesday I've already made a big thread with the top 10 best updates Today, we are going to take a look at, for me, the 10 most horrendous updates CubeCraft ever did.

Disclaimer: I am a Java player, therefore I might be a bit biased. Sorry if I say an update was bad when it clearly wasn't :o

TL;DR - Just read the titles, maybe press the links to the actual threads. If you don't understand, you can always read! :)

10: ⚠️ NOTICE: Magic & Mayhem - The final week!

You know, it is always tough to see a gamemode go, but when Magic & Mayhem was removed, it just hit different. The storyline was completed by most players in under a day, but for some reason, people still kept playing the game. Magic & Mayhem brought something to the network that it hadn't seen before. In fact, there were barely any servers that had seen anything like this before. Custom mobs and weapons, with the ability to farm and discover a very big map, this RPG was very popular. I don't certainly think it should've stayed, but on the other hand, why not? Just leave it as it was and let players enjoy it for a bit longer. A sad day for mankind.

9: Halloween 2020 has risen! - NEW GAME? 🎃😱

I always love seasonal updates. They bring cool lobbies, amazing maps and lovely bundles. But I like seasonal updates the most because they always bring the best games! Present Rush (on of the best games ever made imo), Snow Down, Snowman Survival, Spring RPG and of course, Ender. Ender was a game that really brought in the halloween vibes. People loved this game! I literally had a couple of friends back in the day I normally would play EggWars or something with, but they were unavailable all though Halloween for this game. Halloween 2020 brought a new game in the place however, which is not certainly a bad thing. The problem was that it was Carving Chaos. Sure, some people loved it, but overall, the game was boring and repetitive. If the game was removed after a week, no one would've mind. I think Halloween 2020 brought the worst ever game of CubeCraft to the network, hence it deserves a spot on the list. Glad Ender returned the year after 😅

8: INTRODUCING ISLAND GAMES!

Even though the update was perceived very well during the release, Island Games was a terrible update looking back at it now. This old version of Beta Games, which on bedrock right now contains two great games in the form of Pillars of Fortune and BedWars, contained three games, released one week after the release of the previous one. While these games sounded fun, they were either really tough to play or not executed quite as well. The games, TNT Trouble, Archer Assault and Infection, eventually all ended up being removed. Archer Assault had the longest time of being on the network, as a part of the Featured Game Cycle, but eventually couldn't make it to stay. The games caused a lot of lag and were tough to understand. The concept was nice, most of them were altered from Halo or Call of Duty, but execution could've been better. Not a terrible update, but not the best either.

7: Introducing CubeCraft Plus

Even though all Java ranks we have right now are based on subscriptions, the CubeCraft Plus rank was perceived incredibly bad. For the small cost of $6,99 (if I remember correctly, correct me if I'm wrong) you would get double votes, a cool name, extra cosmetics and an Elytra in the lobbies. More value is normally not a problem, and if you think something is too expensive: don't buy it. What the problem was however was that the at that time current rank system wasn't perfect either. Obsidian barely was barely different from emerald rank, and let's not even get started on Lapiz, which was the worst possible buy you could make, as it was literally the same as Iron. People wanted these features as an addition to the other ranks, but that never happened. Instead, now we all have to pay monthly instead of paying for lifetime...

6: ⚠️ NOTICE: We're updating our network to 1.12.2!

Now we are entering the darker pages of CubeCraft history. Even though the upgrade to 1.12 has enabled some of the community's favourite maps, such as Palace (EggWars to4) and Sanctuary (FFA), it also took down 1.8, which still peaked at 600 members! That's almost more than Java has on an average moment on the day right now! Sure, this is one of the bad decisions that is understandable, but it is still a shame it had to happen. Who knows what aged CubeCraft player we still would have right now on the network if 1.8 wasn't removed? Guess we'll never know...

5: 🥚 Epic EggWars Update! ⚔️

You know something was a mistake when CubeCraft says it themselves:
We will still make mistakes:monkeylook: Beta EggWars :monkeylookaway:, and we're glad you have all stuck by us throughout them.
CubeCraft started experimenting with EggWars in a new, separate gamemode called Beta EggWars. I think this is absolutely the way to test if your update is liked by the community. With a lot of updates, Beta EggWars got better and better. However, the gamemode as a whole was never liked. At the time CubeCraft thought they couldn't improve Beta EggWars anymore, they decided it was time to implement the updates they made to the actual EggWars. The community did not like this approach. After clearly stating they did not enjoy (almost) any of the changes made, CubeCraft went on to patch a part of their update on THE SAME DAY and the days onwards. This is the only time an update received so much backlash that immediate action was deemed necessary by the admin team. Normally, they will give it time to settle in, but that makes EggWars Beta one for the books. Definitely a mistake, horrible update.

4: 🌐 Community Driven Translations

People affected by this update, which was the 100 player big team of volunteers that translated as many of the CubeCraft strings as possible, would probably not agree with me putting this update outside of the top 3. Removing the Translation Team was a decision made by the Admin Team to have less focus on their translations. These people were told almost the same time the rest of the community was told that they were not needed anymore. Not only did this cost CubeCraft a team, it cost them a family, a big community of active players of which I haven't seen 90% return to the network after this. But even if you wouldn't care about any of these members, we have also never seen anything of the promise that they were let go with. The idea of Community Driven Translations was eventually voided, according to my sources, for ChatGPT-like translations from AI. For some reason, after telling the translators never to use Google Translate or similar sites for their translations, they now decided it was time to do a 180 and make that their main plan. Everything about this update sucked and it will go down in the book as one of the biggest community-harming update ever.

🥉: 🎏 BlockWars Update - New Giga Modes + 10v10

With 175 downvotes on the Discord 'Initial Thoughts' thread and almost 7000 messages of complaining and begging for reverting the update, this recent update made one of the biggest impacts on the Bedrock Community, destroying a big part of the BlockWars player base. Why was this update so bad? First of all, it was unasked for. People liked the 5v5 version, which was the version before the update, and had the entire community built around this concept. For example: scrims, tournaments, party size etc. Secondly, according to the arguments given by CubeCraft, they are putting a lot of effort in the 'casual' player, the one that joins the network and looks for something to play. What is in their favour, harms the rest of the BlockWars community. But lastly also the lack of communication. CubeCraft never seemed to ask what the community would think about this update. Not taking into account your own players can only harm yourself, and this clear case of hubris cost CubeCraft a ton. I hope CubeCraft learned something from this update regarding communication so this would never have to happen again.

🥈: The Big Change

Only seeing the name already gives nightmares to some people. October 2, 2018 has been a black page in the history books of CubeCraft. Decimating the amount of games offered, removing all game-specific lobbies and cutting the player base in half. As a server, you never wish to do anything like this. 2018 (and 2019) were tough years for CubeCraft, with Java being unsure of it's future. CubeCraft would try their best to grow back to the size it once was by offering less games, and therefore speeding up queue times and focusing more on specific gamemodes with their updates. This caused a ton of good games to be removed, such as Tower Defense, Arcade, BlockWars and MinerWare. Luckily, with the Game Cycle that was implemented, there was still a chance for players to come back to these games for a short while. With the pandemic, CubeCraft grew back to a size which allowed them to add back a ton of this removed content, but without that, we would've been stuck on the current size for a long time already. I don't think I have to explain in further detail why this update was so terrible, but I'm glad this time is over...

🥇: 🎮 The Future of CubeCraft Java ☕

...Or is it? The Future of CubeCraft Java, also known as the Big Change 2.0, did almost the exact same as the Big Change, but worse. It removed a ton of good content, hoping for the same effect. I am not going into detail why this was so bad. I think everyone expected these two to be the top two. Therefore I am going to explain why I believe the Future was worse than the Big Change. Not only did the Future impact Among Slimes, which would place it above the Big Change on itself, but also did it not give any perspective to the future. The Big Change introduced the Featured Game Cycle, a good concept for old games to be added temporarily. This included some non-pvp games, which weren't available anymore after the removal. This perspective softened the pain, giving the communities still a chance to exist. While MinerWare and Tower Defense still have a great playerbase if it would be added again, it is not so easy this time. I hope CubeCraft gives it a shot, I think it is worth it, but without that glance of hope, it makes it a lot harder to keep playing CubeCraft as a Java player. I think that makes it worse than the Big Change and therefore the worst update CubeCraft has ever put out.

That concludes the list. Do you think I missed one? Or did I put one in you are in complete disagreement with? Let me know what your picks would be! Also, what other top 10 list would you like to see?

Yeah I'm still mad about some of these updates, especially Blockwars 10v10 and "The Big Change 2, Electric Boogaloo". Also the removal of the Translation team was extremely scummy in my opinion, replacing an enthusiastic volunteer teen with AI is a low, heartless move.

I do think you missed one other Bedrock update, which was the removal of Linedash. In my opinion removing Linedash was much worse than adding island games. Linedash was the first game ever removed from Cubecraft Bedrock and it wouldn't be added back until 2.5 years after it was removed. It makes it even worse that the Linedash leaderboards were also removed and still aren't in the game to this day. Despite the fact that Legacy Leaderboards are a thing now.

On the other hand, you guys can see statistics for seasonal games, which we can't (except for snowman survival, but that's a bug as it is still in the normal stats). But I get that anger, definitely a shame such a good game was removed. When was this announced? because I haven't seen a thread on the forums

It was announced in the Discord changelog about 2 days after it came out (late January 2024 I think?) I like to think that I had something to do with it because shortly before it was added I complained about the Present Rush leaderboard being removed. But it was probably unrelated.
