I saw this discussion on Twitter and thought I'd drag it over here to see what you all think. Which song do you think best defines the past decade? It should be a song that received widespread acclaim, did not fade quickly into obscurity and reflected the atmosphere of the decade as a whole. As a point of reference, 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' by Nirvana is usually regarded as the defining song of the nineties (and I couldn't agree more).

Personally I would go with 'Royals' by Lorde, though I think anything in 'Pure Heroine' would contend just as well.

If this gets enough responses I will add a poll with some of the most common choices.

On a quite serious note here, I chose Paolo Nutini - Iron Sky

This is more a personal opinion through the eyes of a European (and Dutch in particular) citizen aka me. This song is about never ending wars and conflicts in our world. A couple of examples are Syria (2011 - present), Ukraine vs Russia (2014 - present), Jemen War (2015 - present) and so on. Many people were killed and even terrosists attacked European city's throughout the years in Paris, Barcelona, Berlin, London, Manchester etc. In 2014 a plane (from Amsterdam - Kuala Lumpur) got shot in Ukraine and 298 people were killed. 196 people were Dutch. This song was on the radio after people were killed in Paris and the song returned after many other incidents in Europe. The lyrics gives people some hope and that's what's the song is all about. Hope.

They put a great part of the speech from Charlie Chaplin (The Great Dictator, 1940) into this song:

To those who can hear me, I say, do not despair
The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed
The bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress
The hate of men will pass, and dictators die
And the power they took from the people will return to the people
And so long as men die, liberty will never perish
Don't give yourselves to these unnatural men
Machine men with machine minds and machine hearts!
You are not machines, you are not cattle, you are men!
You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful
To make this life a wonderful adventure
Let us use that power!
Let us all unite!

So for me this is my song of the 2010s and a bit underrated if you would ask me.
